Hip flexor (m. iliopsoas) strain

Musculus iliopsoas is the deep flexor of thigh and hip. It is attached to the lumbar spine and
descends down to the femur crossing the hip join. It is composed of three muscles - m. psoas
major, m. psoas minor and m. Iliacus. The primary function of this muscle is moving the knee
towards the chest (bending the hip). It also participates in the body rotation and many other
movements such as impacts in fight sports, crawling, walking, climbing stairs, running, jumping
and ball kicking. Due to its attachment along the spine it stabilizes lower spine in everyday
movements.
A hip flexor strain is characterized by tearing of one or more of the hip flexor muscles causing the
pain in the front of the hip or groin. This can range from a small partial tear where there is minimal
pain and minimal loss of function, to a complete rupture involving a severe pain, swelling,
tenderness, bruising, muscle spasm, weakness, limping and inability to continue the activity.
and significant disability. TThe cause lays down in too much repetition or high force often during
sprinting, kicking activities and explosive acceleration particularly following an inadequate
warm-up.
The goal of physical therapy is to reduce the load on tendons entheses by increasing their
flexibility, increase the strength and flexibility of the injured muscle and the muscles that surround it,
especially core and low back muscles. With appropriate management, patients can usually
recover in one to eight weeks or longer depending on the severity. Complete ruptures of the hip
flexor muscles are rare and recovery may be significantly longer
PREVENTION: not ignoring the pain, proportional strengthening and stretching all muscle groups
and that are related to activity, proper warm-up before activity, training technique correction, adequate sports footwear, raising the seat to the proper height for bicyclist.
